How does a pocket diaper work?

The pocket diaper is one of the simplest kinds of cloth diaper — it goes on much like a disposable, but you wash it and reuse it again and again. That very simplicity makes it a favorite at home, with babysitters and at preschool. Here we walk through how it works.

How does a pocket diaper work?

The pocket diaper has a pocket on the inside where you tuck an absorbent insert — one or two, depending on how much needs soaking up. Because the insert is already in place, the diaper is ready to put on straight away, just like a disposable: open, change, close.

You adjust the size with snaps at the front, so the same diaper stays with you through almost the whole diapering period — you never need to buy a new size. At each change you take out the insert (it's kinder to the elastics) and wash the whole diaper. If you've used a disposable insert, you simply throw it away.

The inside keeps skin dry

On the inside, our pocket diapers have a stay-dry fabric that wicks moisture away, so your child feels dry even for a while after the diaper has been filled. The materials are chosen with care and certified to OEKO-Tex Standard 100 — gentle on sensitive skin.

Why the pocket diaper is so well loved

Its biggest advantage is how simple it is: pre-packed and quick to put on, with no loose parts to deal with in the moment. That makes it reassuring to leave with someone else — preschool or a babysitter can manage it with no prior know-how. And because it's used again and again, often through several diapering periods, the cost is spread over a long time.

If you'd rather the insert stayed fixed in the diaper, there's our hybrid / all-in-one diaper — the same simplicity, but with the insert snapped into place.

Tip! Keep some pre-packed diapers by the changing table for a smooth diaper change.
